He Came Running!

I decided to visit Bethlehem Hermitage yesterday to ask for a brochure I need to make a Soiltude Retreat next year.  Chester, New Jersey is a beautiful town with extensive lands suited for farming and raising horses.  Sure enough, as we passed a coral, I saw a solitary horse standing near the fence.  We decided to pull over to take pictures.  The minute I got my legs out the car, this horse saw me,  and came galloping towards me! I couldn't believe my eyes!  He was so beautiful! His large eyes were so full of life and it seems to me he was trying to communicate something.  Oh, I wished I can horse-talk!  Sad to say I didn't have anything to offer him for food, only a hesitant pat on his face.  He was disappointed and turned away back to his post in the corner near the fence.
I felt a sense of disappointment too.  I thought how beautiful it must have been in Paradise before the Fall, when animals were tame and approachable, and the ability to understand and be understood was not a problem.

  1. Thank you Sister Helena for this posting! I am recommending your blog to my friends! Pray for us we are having a silent retreat Saturday with a wonderful Dominican Friar on Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, his favorite Saint! It is being held in a convent of Sisters Minor of Mary Immaculate who are under the patronage of St. Maximilian Kolbe. So we have a mixture of Carmelite, Dominican, and Franciscan! May the Most Holy Trinity bless us on that day, and we invoke Mary, Our Lady of Mercy that day!

  2. Thank you, kwsmith! Blessed Elizabeth was much influenced by a Domonican preacher, Fr. Vallee. May you have a blessed retreat.
